I’ve never been that interested in super cars. Most of them start at prices that will truly make your eyes water, and most of them are as unreliable as a hungover office temp. Given the choice, although cliché, I would have taken a 90’s era Japanese product over a fancy suit for rich collectors. That was until I took the 2000 Lamborghini Diablo GT out for a spin. Let’s just say, I now understand the obsession.

Interior
There are very few cars you step into and they immediately feel special. Surprisingly, there’s much more space in the cabin than I would’ve imagined. It doesn’t feel cramped and the outward visibility is plentiful. Traditionally, the same cannot be said for rear visibility. It’s like looking through peephole as you glance at the monstrous 6.0 L V12. As for the cabin, carbon fiber can be found everywhere. Being the hardcore version, they want you to know exactly where the weight savings are coming from. You can see the lovely carbon fiber weave on the dashboard, center console, and door trim. For as long as I’ve been interested in cars, everybody has raved about how wonderful gated shifters are. Apologies, but you’re about to hear the same kind of fluff from me. This is the first time I’ve seen one up close and it’s one of greatest things to watch operate in a vehicle. It makes the experience so much more mechanical. It gets you that much closer to the gear linkage. Sure, it probably gets scolding hot if you leave it parked in the sun for too long, but what’s a few scars in exchange for this Italian marvel? The Momo seats are very snug and put you in your place like a professional to an amateur.
Exterior
The Lamborghini Diablo GT may be one of the prettiest cars ever put into production. The profile with these big, V12 Lamborghinis has always been quite long, and quite low. This is no exception. The yellow over black contrasts so well and makes its presence even more enticing. However, I wouldn’t call the styling elegant. It’s pretty in a way that’s harsh, brash, and a bit in your face. There’s many angles here that draw your attention to the functional air ducts, and that beloved roof scoop.
Driving Experience
The 6.0 L V12 in the Lamborghini Diablo GT is one of the greatest sounding engines ever made. Looking at the Diablo, you would think that it would be intimidating and very difficult to drive, but that’s not the case. Sure, it takes some time to get used to sliding this big behemoth around. Once you take it out on the track, and it spits you off a few times admittedly, the Diablo becomes incredibly docile. You can position it in the exact direction that you desire. It responds to your input immediately. Is it fast? Yes, very. It’s very refreshing to feel a naturally aspirated V12 in our age of turbocharged units. 90’s Lamborghinis were raw, mean, and unforgiving. That is what makes the Lamborghini Diablo GT such an absolute treat to drive. There’s no electronic fuss here. The only thing keeping you on the road is your talent, and you better hope you don’t run out of that any time soon. It will chew you up and spit you out like you’ve just tasted under cooked Brussels Sprouts.
Conclusion
The 2000 Lamborghini Diablo GT has easily made its way to the top 10 list of greatest driving experiences. For something that feels big, it completely shrinks when you’re the race track. Once you tame the beast, that’s when the real fun can begin.
