The luxury brand with Ferrari running gear has been a guilty fantasy for some time now. Yes. It’s probably going to break at some point in the future, but why dwell on what may or may not happen. Apart has wanted one of these for some time. To cure the curiosity, I hopped into GT Sport to see what the luxury coupe could do.

Exterior

This is a very handsome car especially in this burgundy/maroon guise. It's like a blazer. It's not offensive or brash and has quite subtle beauty. The Gran Turismo S is the epitome of a "date night" vehicle. The look, the sound, and let’s not forget about the brand stamped on the boot, Maserati. It's a name synonymous with money, class, and perhaps the occasional tow truck.

Interior

I was expecting it to be a bit nicer in here. The seats are lined with red stitching that make for a nice accent. Other than that, it's a bit plain Jane in here. It's not bad in any way, but it just feels so normal. For what they were originally asking for, you would think the interior would feel a bit more luxurious than this. If I do have one gripe, all the electronic controls are lit in this green hue that’s rough on the eyes. It’s look like the remnants of a night filled with Four Loko and whiskey.

Driving Experience

If there's one thing I didn't think the Maserati Gran Turismo S would be guilty of was snap over steer. I guess that's what happens when you put a competitive eater in a track suit. Don't get me wrong. The steering is direct and it's quite compliant. One would even call it a true gentlemen's racer. However, turn in hard and you better be ready to catch that back end. It's not, how you would say, progressive. It's much more manic and sudden than that. It's quite controllable if you're on your game but slip up and this Gran Turismo will send you straight into the wall. Of course, there's that spectacular Ferrari/Maserati V8 engine that reconfirms your recent purchase. Nothing quite sounds like a flat plane crank Ferrari V8 banging off the 7500 RPM limiter. The gearbox is quite nice as well. The shifts are quick and purposeful with little to no hesitation.

Cost

So how much will one these set you back? Well, in 2008 the base Maserati Gran Turismo would set you back $114,650. However, due to the depreciation fairy, one of these examples can be picked up in 2018 from the high 20's to the low 40’s. That’s quite a deal for a subsidiary of the prancing horse.

Should you buy one?

I know it’s tempting, you should probably only consider it if you have a stack of cash laying around for any gremlins that may pop up. The consumer reviews for reliability are quite mixed. Some have worked flawlessly, and some spend most of their time in the shop getting their guts fixed. If you do roll the dice and get a good one, I doubt you’ll be disappointed.

Consensus

It's a loud, luxury barge that handles itself surprisingly well on a race track. By now, it’s depreciated to the point that middle class citizens can now afford them. It’s a relatively cheap entry into the world of the prancing horse. It would be a real treat to own one of these, regardless of the questionable reliability. Hey, if you’ve got the money, go for it. Might just want to have a reliable daily just in case though…
