The Declasse Sabre Turbo is a harmless Brute in a tough guy suit. That exterior may look dangerous, but this throwback from the 70’s is mostly show and no go.

Power

Under the hood of the Declasse Sabre Turbo you’ll find an enormous 550 cubic inch V8. Top that with a single bug catcher blower and the result is…not that quick honestly. It launches as quick as a Monday morning workday after 4 shots of Jägermeister and a bottle of tequila. While the big blower may seem intimidating, this big block isn’t revving high any time soon. It’s quite reserved and contained. It’s quiet enough that you can start it without the neighbors calling the police. While it’s a bit of a pig out of the whole, it does have reasonable top end power. Still, the Declasse Sabre Turbo doesn’t feel like it’ll be hanging with any super cars.

Handling

This thing pitches and rolls like bad night’s sleep. While it won’t be much a canyon carver, it would certainly be the ideal choice for a cross-country road trip. The long wheel base ensures for a comfy ride. Toss it through some corners and there’s not much grip here. A big slice of under-steer upon turn-in can be cured with your right foot, but the Declasse Sabre Turbo can get dangerous very quickly.

Interior

Someone went a little over board with ruler. Straight edge to straight edge is all the Declasse Sabre Turbo has to offer here. The gauges have the classic yellow-to-red tachometer that was only popular among shag carpet. The three spoke steering wheel really completes the look.

Exterior

You’ve done it again. It’s pay day and you just put $3500 on black and it came up red. You’ve taken out as many loans as you can, and your credit cards are maxed out. You’ve called in one too many favors and no one’s willing to help. It’s after dark and you’re feeling a bit more paranoid than usual. You lock all the doors twice and turn out the lights. You hear the low rumble of a blown V8 pull into the driveway. You vaguely see the headlights of the Declasse Sabre Turbo before you know collection time has arrived. This thing is mean. It’s a vehicle you really don’t want to look directly in the eye. It’s menacing yet handsome, like an angry lumberjack. It’s clearly the villains’ main choice of shenanigans in any car flick, and boy does it play the part well.

Upgrade Options

They do not skimp on options with the Declasse Sabre Turbo. The front and rear bumpers can be modified with things such as removal of the chrome grill or adding a wheelie bar. There’s a multitude of exhausts to choose from including a side exit. There’s a few different designs and bulges for the hood to choose from, including that wonderful bug catcher blower. As nice as that blower looks though, it will drastically decrease visibility.

Conclusion

The Declasse Sabre Turbo is big, lazy muscle car. There are so many things right and so many things wrong with it. It’s a bit of a pig to drive. It doesn’t handle well. The slow revving V8 isn’t getting you anywhere that quickly, and it’s bit large and difficult to maneuver in the city. However, if you take one look at this thing all sins cease to exist. It’s mean. It’s menacing, and it should be your next purchase.
