Humans have been fascinated with the concept of virtual reality since the 1930's. Of course, back then virtual reality was little more than a color photograph sitting in front of your face in a cardboard helmet. However, the principal remains the same. It was this rudimentary approach that set us on the path we're on today. We have been intrigued with the idea of escaping one reality and joining another. In the recent years, the virtual reality interest has peaked exponentially, with multiple VR systems on the market today for consumers. One of which is the PlayStation VR system developed by Sony. It completely changes the way we think about home entertainment.
The PlayStation VR system arrives in a sizable box with different bundles to choose from. This bundle came with Doom VFR. Since I'm a complete baby when it comes to scary video games, we'll be tossing that away for now and experiencing virtual reality in GT Sport.

The Setup
Opening the PlayStation VR system reveals multiple chords for connecting, a power supply, and the processing unit. At first it may seem a bit daunting but luckily the PlayStation VR setup guide is very easy to follow. There's even a comprehensive guide on YouTube in which you can follow along. The entire setup process can take between 5-10 minutes. As usual, make sure you have plenty of space for this system, and position your chords out of the play area. You certainly wouldn't want to trip on them and fall into your television. That wasn't a fun day...Once setup is complete, you now have a functional computer strapped on your face that will take from our reality into another.
The Look
Some people say these virtual reality machines look weird, and there's no way to elegantly wearing one. I think it looks funky. Then again, I was the kid who had a Jerry curl in high school from 2009-2013. Maybe leave the aesthetics opinion for someone else. The PlayStation VR has this white and blank accent tone and makes it look futuristic. It has tracking lights in the four corners of the screen that light up when operating in this cool, future blue color.
How immersive is it?
Very. It's a very visceral experience the first time you leave...this reality. Loading up GT Sport and taking a "Virtual Tour" changes the way I think about racing games. You're no longer staring at your television in Tampa, Florida. Now, you're at the famous Nürburgring in Germany in a Mercedes SLS AMG. There's a complete 360-degree view and everything has been considered. You can see everything from the hue of the interior buttons to the glare of the sun across your windshield. I found myself squinting at a sun that didn't exist. It's that immersive. The PlayStation VR system even considers elevation changes. Drive down a steep hill and you instantly receive the gut dropping feeling during the change in elevation. It's uncanny. It makes you want to be "there" all the time. It's a true destination experience.
Consensus
Depending on how you bundle it, I would call the PlayStation VR system middle of the road in price point. My example with Doom VR set me back $400 a year ago, but examples of the PlayStation VR alone can be had in the mid-$200 range. Considering that some of these systems can cost upwards of $1300, that's quite a sizable bargain. It makes a great gift for anyone who's interested in gaming and currently has a PlayStation 4. It completely enhances the gaming experience. Does the idea of a different reality intrigue you? Look no further.
