The Discovery

We found this little gem while walking through the Oldsmar Flea Market in Tampa, FL. As usual, went to find one thing, and came out with a multitude of things that had nothing to do with the original planned purchase. On the very edge of the food court in the middle of market we came across a little blue rolling stand. It was so cute! Next to it was a big sign proclaiming, “Mini Doughnuts”. As we all know, every pastry is considerably tastier when it’s packed into a tiny, bite-size package. Will the tiny exterior live up in the world of taste buds? Let’s find out…

The Process

It’s important to note that you will not find any previously made nonsense here. These mini life-giving circles are freshly made every time. There’s no secret about it either. You can watch the entire process through the looking glass on the front of the stand. The dough comes out in a little contraption on the right and forms the familiar doughnut shape. It then pushes the little creation into the grease trap beside it. There’s something magical when you see that little dough circle start to simmer and fry. They come out in a single file line and float long the horizontal grease trap that runs for about 2 feet. They bob along in the grease easily achieving their golden-brown complexion. The real fun starts when they reach the end of the grease trap. A mechanical arm lowers down in the grease trap. The arm has two perfectly sized holes for the little mini perfections. The mini doughnuts float onto the arm 2 at a time. Once the arm is full, it raises and flips them into a little basket. They bounce around until settling in their new-found container.

Flavor

Now that the mini pastries have been created, the mini doughnut can now be covered with toppings if so desired. On today’s trip, we opted for the Taste of Honey flavor. No trickery here. They are literally mini doughnuts with honey drizzled over the top. There’s something beautiful about simplicity. There’s no complicated ingredients, or frivolous presentations. There are few things in the world that taste better than a freshly made, rounded piece of dough. They absolutely melt in your mouth. Immediately. The dough itself has very nice taste. It’s not too sweet, but far from bland. Perfect, for lack of a better word. Then, the light drizzle of honey is introduced, and all is right with the world. It’s the balance of fresh, crispy dough drizzled with a hint of sweetness that brings everything together.

Conclusion

The Mini Doughnut shop in Oldsmar, Florida is one of the only traditional doughnut shops left in the Tampa Bay Area. You can’t be in a bad mood while eating one of these little creations. They can instantly brighten up your day. Always fresh. Always good. These little doughnuts will not disappoint.
