The Atmosphere
Oishi Sushi and Thai feels it should be twice as expensive as it is. It’s not a massive restaurant and it doesn’t need to be. It manages to be small and boutique, but not pretentious in anyway. That’s a rare feat for sushi restaurants these days. You’re immediately greeted by the pleasant wait staff who are eager and attentive. We have been coming to this little gem for almost a year and have never experienced any of the staff be rude or impatient with their customers. Big smiles are very plentiful here and they are very helpful if you have questions about a dish. You really get a sense that the people here enjoy what they do. That makes the experience so much more inviting. The ambiance is warm and welcoming. I’m no interior designer, but they’ve done a wonderful job with this place. The walls have this deep, orange resemblance that’s very inviting. In contrasts the black carpeting perfectly. The tables at the booths almost look like sparkling wood that’s been polished with incredible detail. In addition, there’s a substantial flake in the paint that makes the package even more attractive. The remaining tables aren’t as dazzling unfortunately. They’re your standard wood grain effect with black trim along the edges. Nice but, you want to snag a booth if you have the chance. When you finish drooling over how nice the tables are, you’ll sit in the cushy booths and notice that the napkins are folded into little triangles! Am I the only one that gets excited by napkin folding? Anyway, there’s your standard affair of saucers with soy sauce at the ready, and chopsticks if you’re so inclined.
The Presentation
Oishi Sushi and Thai has a vast menu. Everything from signature rolls, appetizers, and other Asian entrees are available. Their signature sushi rolls consist of 8-12 pieces. Today’s dish is the Tokyo Tower. Yes, the name says it all. The presentation here is stunning. The Tokyo Tower arrives on a square plate with the tower smack dab in the middle. The sushi tower stands high and confident, like the valedictorian of your graduation. Reds, greens, and oranges pop from every direction. On top sits the mountain of krab meat and bright orange roe. To add to the aesthetic, the tower is then surrounded by decorative umami sauce and spicy mayo that has been artistically sprawled across the plate. To finish, you have the traditional 2 oranges on the side with wasabi and ginger. This is easily a $20 roll at other sushi places. You’ll be hard pressed to find a prettier roll for the price.
How does it taste?
Like sushi, but very good sushi. You’re hit with so many flavors at once that it feels like someone is slapping with delicious. It gives a whole new meaning to taste the rainbow. One would think the vastly different ingredients would become over bearing in the process, but everything blends together as it should. This is what good sushi is supposed to taste like. If you’re a fan of imitation krab, you’ll want to pitch a tent here and call it home. They dump the stuff right on top with no apologies and it’s the best thing Hershey’s Syrup (shout out to the 90’s). I couldn’t get enough of it. Even though these rolls are quite extravagant, you’re not sacrificing with quantity here. They’re huge. Some say sushi goes down like water, and I admit to being part of that crowd. However, these pieces make you re-think your life. They’re large enough that I need to coordinate how to fit all this goodness in one bite. When it comes to sushi, there’s few places that do it better.
Verdict
Oishi Sushi and Thai is punching above its weight class and making no excuses for it. This little sushi restaurant is proving that quality sushi doesn’t have to amount to a family cell phone bill. They manage to do quality and quantity in a package looks good and tastes good. Enough said.
